In October 2024, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) selected the “right to erasure” (Article 17 GDPR) as the focus for its fourth Coordinated Enforcement Action (CEF), set to begin in early 2025. This action will review how organizations handle requests to delete personal data, a right frequently exercised by individuals and often the subject of complaints. The goal is to identify challenges in applying this right and to highlight best practices.
The CEF allows national Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) to work together on key data protection issues. Previous actions have focused on topics such as cloud service use in the public sector and the role of Data Protection Officers. The findings from these actions help create a broader understanding of how different controllers approach these issues. The EDPB’s report regarding to the 2024 action, focusing on the right of access and it is planned to be published in early 2025.
The CEF is part of the EDPB’s larger strategy for 2024-2027, designed to improve collaboration and enforcement across the EU, helping ensure that data protection rights are effectively upheld.
In this context, it is expected to ensure an effective solution regarding to the problem of not being able to remove information that has been removed from the relevant site but maintain to be in the databases of search engines.
