European Data Protection Board (EDPB),  Determine Right to Erasure (Right to be  Forgotten) As Next Year’s Coordinated Action Topic

In October 2024, the European Data  Protection Board (EDPB) selected the “right  to erasure” (Article 17 GDPR) as the focus  for its fourth Coordinated Enforcement  Action (CEF), set to begin in early 2025. This  action will review how organizations handle  requests to delete personal data, a right  frequently exercised by individuals and often  the subject of complaints. The goal is to  identify challenges in applying this right and  to highlight best practices.

The CEF allows national Data Protection  Authorities (DPAs) to work together on key  data protection issues. Previous actions have  focused on topics such as cloud service use in  the public sector and the role of Data  Protection Officers. The findings from these  actions help create a broader understanding  of how different controllers approach these  issues. The EDPB’s report regarding to the 2024 action, focusing on the right of access  and it is planned to be published in early  2025.

The CEF is part of the EDPB’s larger strategy  for 2024-2027, designed to improve  collaboration and enforcement across the EU,  helping ensure that data protection rights are  effectively upheld.

In this context, it is expected to ensure an  effective solution regarding to the problem of  not being able to remove information that has  been removed from the relevant site but  maintain to be in the databases of search  engines.
